Germany-based YYachts, which builds lightweight, swift sailing superyachts, has just signed American representation to better serve the U.S. market. The builder has tapped Connecticut-based Rodgers Yacht Sales as its exclusive stateside partner.
YYachts opened its doors in 2016, under the ownership of Michael Schmidt. Schmidt previously owned Hanse Yachts, which focused on small sailing yachts. He’s personally a well-experienced, passionate sailor, too, enjoying regattas and cruising. Schmidt believed he could appeal to seasoned sailors as well as newcomers with carbon composite projects to about 100 feet (30.5 meters) through YYachts. Specifically, both types of owners want yachts that handle easily. Not only did that work in attracting customers overall, but it attracted ones on both sides of the Atlantic.
The largest model currently in build at YYachts is the Y8 yacht (pictured), a nearly 80-footer (24-meter). Naval architecture is by Surge Projects, with experience in raceboats, production sailing yachts, and custom sailing superyachts. The Y8 is for an American client, who will sail in light winds. Halyards and sheets are concealed, mindful of the owner running her with a small crew. She has a self-tacking jib as well. Although the number of guests who’ll join cruises remains confidential, overall, YYachts offers a choice of four or five staterooms.

Because American clients have been increasing, it simply made sense to establish a presence on U.S. soil, according to the company. “Over the past few years, we have sold several yachts to American clients,” notes Tijl Hetterschijt, YYachts’ managing director. “We are confident this partnership will lead to significant growth in the region.” Hetterschijt further points to the experience that Bob Rodgers, head of Rodgers Yacht Sales, and his team have with sailing yachts. Dating to 1987, the firm is the exclusive U.S. representative for Baltic Yachts, too, among other sailing builders.
“We are incredibly excited about this new partnership with YYachts,” Rodgers says. “Their portfolio perfectly aligns with our loyal customer base, who are consistently looking to upgrade to larger, higher-quality vessels.”
Rodgers Yacht Sales will handle sales, service, and support across the country.
