Six superyachts are in different design and construction stages at Delta Marine. Although most are out of the spotlight, the owners of the yacht Vagabond are among those willing to lend insight into their soon-to-be-delivered custom projects. Their modest-size cruiser is for enjoying the best of the Pacific Northwest with minimal crew.

In fact, at 110 feet (33.53 meters), Vagabond is an anomaly for a custom build. Interestingly, according to Michelle Jones, Delta’s vice president, that length is actually becoming more common for the shipyard. “We’ve experienced increasing demand for a fully custom option in the 110- to 124-foot size range,” she explains. Further surprising, the well-experienced owners of the yacht Vagabond wanted a size manageable by themselves with as few crew as needed. All the while, they want to spend quality family time as they enjoy the sights of the San Juan Islands in Washington State, along with destinations up to Alaska.
One of the first orders of business was creating the hull design. The owners will benefit from speed when wanted yet also long range at dialed-back rpm. Specifically, Delta Marine anticipates the twin 2,600-hp MTUs will deliver a 27-knot max speed for get-home or pure-enjoyment situations. At the other end of the spectrum, 12- to 14-knot speeds should deliver transatlantic capabilities. On a related subject, the yacht Vagabond is Delta’s first to meet the IMO’s Tier III and the EPA’s Tier 4 emissions regulations. Additionally, the semi-displacement hull is Delta’s first new hull design exclusively analyzed via Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). As is its custom, Delta Marine handles all naval architecture and engineering in house.

To make owner operations and crew duties equally easier, the yacht Vagabond has walkaround side decks and two external control stations. Naturally, there’s more than one seat in the pilothouse, too. A cozy observation settee/dinette—also convertible to a berth for, say, a harbor pilot—complements the twin helm seats. Also notable, Delta Marine developed a concealed, flush-mounted anchor, with the anchor manufacturer, aft.
Whether in British Columbia or American waters, the owners and their family have an elegantly calming atmosphere in which to relax. The Delta Design Group is putting the finishing touches on the interior, highlighted by oak paneling with contrasting deeply toned wenge accents. Minimalist metalwork complements the wood, as do fabric and accessory tones evocative of the sea and sand. The ambience extends from the main saloon to the four staterooms below deck, including the master suite.

Come mealtime, the family has a choice of the casualness of the main aft deck or the formality of the dining area adjacent to the saloon. They additionally can enjoy cozy, casual meals in the country kitchen, where a dinette and barstools along the center island both welcome them. Pre- or post-dinner cocktails get served up at the bar aft on the bridge deck. Since it’s within a semi-enclosed space, it affords some privacy and protection from Mother Nature. Retractable sun awnings amplify the protection.
Of course, the cruising lifestyle is all about close-to-the-water fun, too. Therefore, the yacht Vagabond totes a few toys, including a custom aluminum tender stowing on the upper deck. The owners or their two-person crew can launch it via an adjacent davit. Other toys stowing in the transom garage might launch via the lowering swim platform. Swimmers can take advantage of Hydromar transformer sea stairs in the swim platform as well.

The owners should be able to begin enjoying the waters of Washington State and more starting this summer.
