They say the third time’s the charm, so that probably holds true for the owner and crew of the famed sailing yacht Adix. About a month ago she returned to Pendennis for her third major refit there; that’s her above, without her masts.
Measuring 64 meters LOA (210 feet), the three-masted Adix is the largest megayacht that Pendennis has lifted out of the water, using its 400-ton hoist. She’s expected to remain at the yard through March 2009, getting a top-to-bottom makeover. Work will include repainting her topsides and inner bulwarks, rebuilding her chart house, rewiring some areas, and refurbishing other deck features and equipment.
Built by Astilleros de Mallorca, Adix remains one of the largest sailing yachts constructed since the 1930s. She has participated in famous regattas, crossed the Pacific Ocean, and cruised many of the world’s most famous ports since delivery day. Her and her owner’s relationship with Pendennis stems from 1990, when she became one of the then-new yard’s first refits. Her interior was redone at that time, and her hull lines and underwater structure were also modified. Ten years later Adix returned, for her 10-year Lloyds survey as well as to receive modifications to make her compliant with the MCA Code, governing the safety of large yachts. That work included rewiring, replumbing, reinstalling her engines, and the construction and installation of two new watertight bulkheads.
Clearly the tasks performed over these many years were done properly, and the owner and crew have been satisfied. This time around should be no different. As Sean Whitney, Adix‘s first mate, says, “We are glad to be back at Pendennis Shipyard and are looking forward to a successful third refit, by a yard and workforce we consider to be among the best in the business.”
