A lot has been made in traditional media of some of the steps megayacht owners are taking to ensure their security onboard. Rumors persist of Paul Allen’s Octopus being manned by former Navy SEALs, for example, and of Roman Abramovich’s upcoming delivery Eclipse being crewed by former SAS and Special Boat Service personnel. Further reports have Eclipse featuring a missile-defense system and a submarine that can escape through the hull.
Regardless of the validity of these statements, the fact remains that yachts are indeed at increasing risk of serious crimes like armed robbery and hijacking. As Patrick Estebe, president of AffAirAction, told me for an article for Ocean Home magazine’s next issue, “Yachts are a very soft target, a tempting target,” adding that it’s key to anticipate various behaviors. “In terms of security, you are dealing with people’s minds,” he explains. “They are creative and very unpredictable.”
Perhaps that’s why companies besides training institutes are beginning to take more steps to equip owners and crew with security systems that do more than make noise or shine bright lights. Just a few days ago, in fact, Nobiskrug announced it has collaborated with an electronics company on a defense system that can be tailored to new builds and existing yachts alike. More important, however, it can be adapted to include non-lethal and lethal weapons alike, in addition to other features.
The system was developed with Ultra Electronics, which has specialized in defense and security electronics systems for more than 30 years. Its client list includes the UK Ministry of Defence as well as other military and commercial firms. For this system, Nobiskrug and Ultra Electronics can incorporate relatively simple security measures or a combination of simple and more complex ones. For example, owners who plan to cruise on occasion in mostly traditionally safe areas might be interested in automated alarms, surveillance equipment, and some passive security measures. Should the need arise, however, these can be integrated with a secure communication system (seemingly to prevent tapping) and navigation support measures. If an owner will travel through high-risk areas and/or feel a personal need for more security, Nobiskrug and Ultra Electronics can provide armor plating and, as mentioned above, weapons integration.
Pricing has not been released, so interested parties should contact Nobiskrug for more specifics.
