On-land and on-water improvements at Pendennis just got the green light. Pendennis’ 6.5-acre site in Falmouth, England will see the addition of construction sheds, offices, wet docks, and a yacht basin over the next several months.
Pendennis had actually already petitioned the Cornwall county council for permission to create the basin, seen in the illustration above. That basin will have a flap gate at its entry. This, in combination with the jetties forming its perimeter, will protect against tidal fluctuations. One of those jetties will also be able to accommodate megayachts to 361 feet (110 meters), a size which Pendennis thus far hasn’t been able to build or refit in Falmouth.
As for the other additions, Pendennis will add about 29½ feet (nine meters) to the height of its current dry dock, to accommodate taller masts and taller yacht structures overall. A new 197- by 34-foot (60- by 10.5-meter) wet dock will be created. The other new wet dock will also serve as a hoisting berth for Pendennis’ existing 400-ton-capacity crane and measure about 262 feet by 46 feet (80 by 14 meters). The existing wall along the shore will be repaired and strengthened, and two construction halls will join an existing shed. The goal is to allow the hoisting berth to help move yachts to and from the extra halls, and thereby increase business—and in turn bolster the local economy.
Finally, yet another building will have crew offices and accommodations, a hospitality area, staff offices, and workshops.
All of this is in addition to some improvements that Pendennis has already completed. These include enclosing the (75-meter) dry dock and adding a 180-foot-long (55-meter-long) tented area on land.
