Even with the increasing number of megayachts well in excess of the 500-gross-ton mark, the majority of megayacht buyers still commission projects beneath that threshold. That’s why Moonen Shipyards is shopping the two designs seen here, one to feature a steel hull and the other to employ aluminum.
Longtime Moonen collaborator René van der Velden penned both projects’ lines. The steel-hulled megayacht, above, measures 138 feet (42 meters), while the all-aluminum one, pictured below, measures 161 feet (49 meters). The largest Moonen to date, the newly launched Sofia, matches the LOA of the steel project, so both of the new designs should enhance the Dutch shipyard’s offerings.
Both new megayacht designs also echo previous Moonen offerings. The 138-footer, for example, features a full-displacement hull, for moderate speeds and comfort at long range. Moonen has built several displacement yachts, including the Moonen 84, 96 RPH, and Moonen 124. The 161-footer falls in with Moonen’s Fast Displacement series, to which the 82, 94, 99, and 129 Alu all belong.
Performance parameters for the 138- and 161-footer will depend upon a client’s final engine selection and other custom arrangements.
