This year marks an important milestone for Mondo Marine, having chosen a North American sales representative for the first time. As part of that move, which saw the selection of Florida-based Denison Yacht Sales, Mondo Marine is also promoting two new megayacht designs, the M45 and M56. Both are explorer megayachts meant for buyers who have remained active the past few years, and who promise to remain that way for years to come. Furthermore, both can start construction upon the signing of a contract.
Even though some more traditional megayacht styles have been sold by shipyards worldwide recently, adventurous owners have remained the steadiest buyers since before the global economic recession. Alex Clarke, the Mondo Marine rep within Denison Yacht Sales, describes the Mondo Marine M45 (above) and M56 (below) as being blends of ocean research vessels, cruisers, and of course stylish yachts. Both bear naval architecture by Hydro Tec, steel hulls that can be fitted with ice belts and therefore be ice-classed, and interior layouts fully open to customization.
The names of the Mondo Marine M45 and M56 reveal their LOAs: 45 meters (147’6”) for the former and 56 meters (183’7”) for the latter. The M45 has a healthy 28’9” (8.8-meter) beam, while the M56 has a bit more elbowroom, at 32’1” (9.8 meters). As you’d expect of expedition yachts, the two Mondo Marines bear deeper drafts than semi-displacement yachts do: 8’9” (2.7 meters) for the M45 and 10’2” (3.1 meters) for the M56.
Despite their differences, the yachts have the same anticipated cruising speeds, 14 knots, with twin 862-hp Caterpillars powering the M45 and twin 1,850-hp MTUs powering the larger yacht. At a best cruise of 12 knots, each yacht should also see ranges of 5,000 miles or better. It’s worth noting that the speeds are based on several tank tests as well as CFD (computational fluid dynamics) conducted with the Krylov Institute of St. Petersburg, Russia. The institute has extensive experience testing naval and commercial ship designs—and therefore vessels which are out in all types of seas and conditions, much like expedition yachts may encounter.
The Mondo Marine M45 and M56 share other similarities, too. Each can be arranged with five staterooms, including the main-deck owner’s suite. That suite can include a spa area complete with massage room, sauna, and a Turkish bath—and the spa can be accessible from the saloon for guests to use as well, without compromising the full privacy of the owner’s suite. Fold-down balconies off the saloon plus aft-deck doors that can remain open make the main common area more enjoyable, especially in a remote anchorage. So, too, does the fold-down transom, making for a massive swim platform. Should the ocean be too chilly for swimming, the Mondo Marine M45 and M56 each have a pool, with jets to create current, aft on the upper deck. And, the top-most of the four decks aboard each megayacht have cozy dining areas shaded by hardtops.
Pricing for the Mondo Marine M56 is €29.5 million (about $38.62 million at press time), while the M45 is €21.5 million (about $28.15 million). Delivery can be set for 2015.
