Nine months after joining IGY Marinas’ growing group of marinas in the Americas, the Marina at Red Frog Beach (Red Frog Marina for short) is increasingly attracting Americans, Europeans, and residents of farther-flung regions.
Red Frog Marina is in Bocas Del Toro, Panama, an archipelago located 133 miles from the Panama Canal and with its own international airport. Panama is increasingly attracting retirees, thanks to its natural surroundings and economic incentives; Businessweek magazine even called it “the new Florida” in 2009. While Panama City attracts people looking for the hustle and bustle, Bocas Del Toro has a more laid-back vibe. The U.S. dollar is the currency, and although Spanish is the official language, English is widely spoken. Nature-wise, it has a rainforest, and its beaches each spring are dotted by leatherback and hawksbill turtles laying eggs. Weather-wise, it’s outside of the hurricane zone.
Red Frog Marina itself is tucked into mangroves on the leeward side of Bocas Del Toro. In addition, its 20-foot (nearly 6.1-meter) depth means power and sail megayachts alike, up to 250 feet (about 76 meters) LOA, can access it. The marina has space for 84 yachts in total, a mix of liveaboard and transient yachts. With rates starting at just $2 per foot per day for megayachts, it’s no wonder. Amenities at Red Frog Marina attracting attention are a fuel dock, a new bathhouse that also features laundry facilities, free WiFi, and access to the two restaurants that are part of the Red Frog Beach Resort. A water taxi can take your crew 10 minutes away to grocery stores in Bocas Town. The same water taxi can take you and your guests there for more restaurants and shopping, plus the above-mentioned airport. Marina staff can further arrange zipline and hiking trips in the island’s rainforest, plus fishing and diving excursions.
Because the marina is part of a larger real estate development, some homes are available to purchase in combination with a slip. The new Jungle Lodge homes (above), which have two bedrooms plus a loft and look just as they’re named, come with slips and start at just shy of $250,000. Prices of other homes, also with slips, rise to $1 million.
