A green light from the government of Grenada means that Port Louis Marina will soon increase its berthing capacity by nearly 50 percent. The expansion comes a decade after the marina opened its doors.
A Camper & Nicholsons Marinas property, Port Louis Marina will begin constructing the slips this year. The expansion will result in 70 additional berths, complementing the existing 160. In addition, they will fit the existing marina layout and aesthetic appeal. Camper & Nicholsons Marinas does not specify what lengths of yachts the new berths should accommodate. Currently, Port Louis Marina can take a maximum LOA of 295 feet (90 meters). Regardless, it does say that the future goal is to be flexible, handling a variety of LOAs and types. Further to that point, Port Louis Marina wants to accommodate sailing yachts, including regatta racers, as well as traditional “small” cruisers straight on up through the superyacht size range.
During our visit to Port Louis Marina in 2010, we learned few megayachts made it that far south. Grenada lies 90 miles off the coast of Venezuela. The off-the-beaten-path nature of the marina, however, was among its greatest appeals. It continues to be a strong pull today, as does its location outside of the hurricane belt. In addition, Port Louis Marina’s proximity to St. George’s, Grenada’s capital, makes it easy for owners and guests to head into town for a fine meal and entertainment. That is, of course, if they don’t wish to stay on the property. Naturally, Port Louis Marina has options for drinks and dining on site.
Glynn Thomas, Port Louis Marina’s general manager, says the prime minister of Grenada, as well as various government ministers, have shown strong support for its operations. “We are delighted to see the future of yachting here in Grenada looking so healthy,” Thomas concludes.
