If it seems yacht-buying options are limited to new builds and brokerage offerings, where the former may require more time than you want to wait and the latter allows little personal input, not so fast. Big Star, a 164-footer (50-meter) at McMullen & Wing, blends the advantages of customization with a far shorter wait time. In fact, Big Star can be completed within 18 months to two years.
Big Star was previously known as StarFish, commissioned as a successor to the 148-foot (45-meter) Big Fish. Like Big Fish, which covered 60,000 miles in two years, she has a hull engineered for long-range cruising in a variety of climates. Unfortunately, in August 2012, StarFish suffered a fire at McMullen & Wing, about two and a half years into an expected three-year build. While the superstructure and interior were damaged and are therefore available for design according to your wishes, surveyors determined her hull, with a 95-percent-complete engine room, remained unscathed. That’s why McMullen & Wing is able to complete Big Star to a new owner’s specifications. (Her original owner, Richard Beattie, decided to sell because of the extra time and resources that would be required, plus he still owned Big Fish and therefore didn’t anticipate having two megayachts simultaneously.)
Big Star’s original designer, Gregory C. Marshall Naval Architects, has a handful of superstructure styles from which to choose, including the ones shown here, complete with fold-down balconies. Ten guests can join you aboard, with staterooms and common areas arranged as you wish. You’d be wise to keep the owner’s deck, though, which occupies the second deck and will boast excellent views, particularly aft if you situate the stateroom there (the way it was aboard Big Fish, you may recall). Alternately, the master suite can go forward on the main deck, an arrangement that will likely speak to buyers who actively offer their megayachts for charter. That in turn leaves the upper-deck space available for a skylounge equipped with a bar.
As for other highlights, imagine yourself standing high atop the water in the cozy crow’s nest, or lazing in either of the two pools (one forward, one aft). If you opt for the aft pool, when it’s not in use, a teak-laid cover makes it blend into the rest of the deck. It’s easy to imagine dockside cocktail parties being hosted here, given the amount of space the covered area provides.
