A partially completed 164-footer (50-meter) at McMullen & Wing known as yard number 1016 has a new owner. The expedition-style megayacht should set out for her first voyage in about two years.
McMullen & Wing is keeping the megayacht’s name confidential for now. The New Zealand-based builder previously promoted yard number 1016 for sale as Big Star. She started construction under the name StarFish. The megayacht was the successor to the 148-foot (45-meter) Big Fish. True to her expedition nature, her hull was engineered for long-range cruising in a variety of climates. Unfortunately, in August 2012, StarFish suffered a fire at McMullen & Wing. She was about two and a half years into the expected three-year build. The aluminum superstructure and interior were damaged. However, surveyors determined her steel hull, with a nearly-complete engine room, was sound. That’s why McMullen & Wing is able to complete yard number 1016. (Her original owner, Richard Beattie, decided to sell because of the extra time and resources that would be required. He also still owned Big Fish and didn’t anticipate having two yachts simultaneously.)
The owner of yard number 1016 is retaining Gregory C. Marshall Naval Architect for styling, engineering, and interior design. The design studio was involved in each aspect when the megayacht first started. McMullen & Wing’s in-house design department is also collaborating. In fact, it’s hiring new staff for this and other departments accordingly. Overall, the decor will be contemporary. Specifics are not yet available, other than there being “natural materials” employed, according to the yard.
Twelve guests will be housed aboard in five staterooms. Features such as balconies, floor-to-ceiling windows, hot tubs, and sunning spaces will be put to good use. So, too, should the cockpit. Yard number 1016 will mix fishing and lounging back here. Other amenities include a bridge-deck owner’s suite, with a private aft deck and garden. The dining area should feel like an indoor-outdoor space due to the fold-down balconies. And, a beach club will welcome guests indulging in watersports and more relaxation. A variety of tenders and toys will be at everyone’s disposal.
On a related note, the owner is not from New Zealand and is reportedly exploring the areas surrounding the shipyard whenever making a visit to see the latest progress. Come delivery, yard number 1016 will depart from Auckland for further South Pacific adventures. Following that, other global travels await.
