Hull number one of Oceanic Yachts’ Oceanic 140 series is now under contract. She’s the Oceanic 140 DiElec model, so-named for featuring diesel-electric propulsion.
As we’ve explained previously, Oceanic Yachts is a line of megayachts being built at Canados. It was born out of observations of the yachting market the past several years. Megayacht owners are prioritizing fuel economy and alfresco enjoyment. To address fuel economy, each Oceanic Yachts model, from Arrabito Naval Architects, blends elements of displacement designs with planing designs. It extends the efficient fuel burn to about 14 knots, versus speeds typically a few knots slower. The build team refers to the hull as a “displaning” hull.
Specifically, the Oceanic 140 DiElec has a twin-stepped hull and a bulbous bow. A similar yacht hull (same configuration, but slightly longer) was tank tested at the Italian Naval Institute. That hull was designed by Canados’ in-house naval architect and Arrabito Naval Architects. It revealed good results. The Oceanic Yachts team says cruise speed was between 22 and 24 knots, and maximum speed neared 27 knots. They also determined that a speed of 8.5 knots would permit a range of 5,400 nautical miles.
The Oceanic 140 DiElec hull is therefore based on that same hull. LOA is 140’9” (42.95 meters) LOA, with a beam of 26’10” (8.22 meters). She bears composite construction with Kevlar, for strength and weight savings. Since construction had already started on spec, delivery should occur early next year. The owner of this first Oceanic 140 DiElec can opt to run on the triple 2,600-hp MTUs or two 120-kW Auxilia electric motors. Under the former, she’ll see an expected 23-knot cruise and 27-knot top end. Range at 23 knots should be 720 nautical miles. The electric motors alone will deliver the long range mentioned above, at the same speed also mentioned above. The Oceanic Yachts team additionally says that slower speed will result in a fuel burn of less than 13 gph (50 lph).
The owner of hull number one of the Oceanic 140 DiElec has tapped Michela Reverberi for interior design. No information is yet available on the materials that will be used. However, the owner of the Oceanic 140 DiElec will have his suite on the upper deck. It’s akin to an owner’s apartment, including a private alfresco area with hot tub forward and additional alfresco dining aft. The wheelhouse will therefore occupy the forward portion of the main deck.
