Several years ago, we at MegayachtNews.com published our take on the traditional poem “A Visit From St. Nicholas,” a.k.a. “The Night Before Christmas.” It was so well received that we re-publish it each year at this time. Sit back and enjoy “The Night Before Christmas, Yachting Style.” Our best wishes to you and your family for a season of happiness.
‘Twas the night before Christmas
And all through the decks
Not a crewmember was stirring
Not even their necks
The stockings were hung by the transom with care
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there
The guests were nestled all snug in their beds
While visions of superyachts danced in their heads
When out on the water there arose such a clatter
The captain sprang from his berth to see what was the matter
When what to his wondering eyes should appear
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer,
With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
The captain knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.
More rapid than dolphins his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;
“Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! on Cupid! on, Donder and Blitzen!
To the top of the mast! to the top of the seawall!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!”
So up to the crow’s nest the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too.
As the captain drew in his head, and was turning around,
Through the aft-deck doors St. Nicholas came with a bound.
He was dressed in beachwear, from his head to his foot,
Underwater exhaust prevented dirtying with soot;
A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, off the swim platform he rose;
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But the captain heard him exclaim, as he drove out of sight,
“Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night.”
