Fincantieri is moving beyond megayacht construction into other aspects of the industry. It is obtaining a minority stake in Camper & Nicholsons, with the option to acquire a larger portion.
The deal is being made via capital injection. The amount of the financial investment has not been disclosed.
Fincantieri is one of the world’s largest shipbuilding groups and has a yachting division focused on megayachts measuring 262 feet (80 meters) and higher. Camper & Nicholsons had already established a relationship with Fincantieri over the past several years. It represented the owners for two yachts from that division, namely Serene, delivered in 2011, and Ocean Victory (above), delivered in 2014. The stake in Camper & Nicholsons is intended to broaden Fincantieri’s reach in new-yacht construction.
In a statement, Giuseppe Bono, CEO of Fincantieri, says, “From today we are among the first shipbuilders to directly oversee the promising megayachts market segment. Our presence will cover the entire range of activities typical for this business, from sales and marketing to life-cycle management of these very special units.”
You may recall that last summer, Camper & Nicholsons was sold following the liquidation of its then-parent company, Rodriguez Group. The buyer was Colosseum Services, a Swiss luxury-goods company. Colosseum Services continues to be the majority stakeholder.
