“I just had it inside me and had to get it out!” So says Bill Prince of Bill Prince Yacht Design regarding this sweet dayboat, which he’s designed as both the open version you see here and an enclosed limo tender. The Prince 40 was inspired by some of the most classic names in runabout history, like Riva and Garwood, with thoroughly modern amenities for today’s owners and guests.
With a 40-foot (12.2-meter) LOA and a 10’8” (3.3-meter) beam, the Prince 40 has elegant lines that belie her dimensions. “Elegant” is a key word for his office, part of a philosophy the team calls elegant engineering. Prince says features need to be equally practical as they do pretty. A good example is the V-shape stainless steel ribbon you see running aft and down the transom. To each side just aft of the teak swath are recessed cleats. And, the metal ribbons themselves are natural places for docklines to run.
Also pretty and practical: the starboard-side boarding door (no climbing over the coaming) and separation of the two cockpits. The back of the aft benchseat aboard the Prince 40 contains a refrigerator, icemaker, and even a cooktop. Prince sees the boat equally well suited to wine and cheese sunset cruises and zipping around offshore for the whole day. There’s even a cabin below decks, and a TV rises from just aft of the windshield to port. (Speaking of the windshield, Prince took design cues from the speedster automotive sector of the 1950s. And the above-mentioned teak swath is much like the wood detailing on modern-day Rolls-Royce convertibles.)
The Prince 40 has been designed to accommodate a variety of engine packages, from V-drive inboards to pod drives and stern drives. “We can get this boat to go way too fast!” Prince laughs. He’s really not joking, though: The 43-foot Black Diamond, a boat he designed that was built by Schiada Boats in 2014, does 78 knots.
