The Palumbo Group wasted no time in getting the former Mondomarine shipyard in Savona, Italy back to operations. As part of its Palumbo Superyachts Refit group of site, the Savona shipyard is refitting the 10-year-old Kinta.
Kinta, measuring 175 feet (53 meters), saw haul-out on January 11. Palumbo Superyachts Refit isn’t specifying details on the work being performed. However, it does say she’s undergoing refit and maintenance tasks. Kinta launched in 2008 from Proteksan Turquoise (now Turquoise Yachts) as Vinydrea. Since she underwent a full interior re-do in 2012, the Palumbo Superyachts Refit task list may just be mechanical. That prior refit saw rich wenge wood cover her soles, for example.
Palumbo Superyachts Refit is also not disclosing how long Kinta will remain on site. Regardless, the company has a temporary lease. It signed a six-month deal to take over the Mondomarine shipyard, and put nine remaining employees there to work, in December. Mondomarine is in bankruptcy liquidation, with its shareholders facing various serious allegations, including false accounting and fraud. (On a related note, financial police conducted raids of an investor’s office this week, according to Italian newspaper reports. A judge plans to question other investors in the coming weeks, too.)
Palumbo Group does, though, intend to have the Savona site become a permanent part of its refit division. In addition, in a statement it released announcing the acquisition, the company indicated it plans to rehire a significant number of former Mondomarine employees, once full takeover occurs.
If the Savona shipyard does become a permanent Palumbo property, it will bring the total Palumbo Superyachts Refit sites to six. One is in Marseilles, France, for instance, while another is in Monaco. The existing Italy-based presences are in Naples and Ancona (where ISA Yachts operates). The last shipyard is in Malta.
