It’s one thing to offer a semi-custom series pledging global cruising capabilities It’s another to have customers who’ve already proven it’s possible. JFA Yachts is building the Long Island 87 yacht as the successor to a capable sailing catamaran series for a family of four wishing to circumnavigate the world.
In fact, the Long Island 87 draws largely on the Long Island 85 (below), which has two deliveries. Owner of the Long Island 85 have set off for both poles, plus cruised from the Pacific Ocean to the Baltic Sea. Similarly, the new model is a bluewater cruiser, which really appealed to the owners. One of them says, “We found this yacht to be the perfect balance between performance under sail and functional living spaces.” Additionally, the family looks forward to traveling the world “in unparalleled comfort, safety, and luxury.”
Since JFA Yachts builds it full Long Island range, of both sailing and power yachts, with aluminum hulls and fiberglass superstructures, the Long Island 87 yacht follows suit. Naval architecture is by Marc Lombard Design Group, the same studio behind the 85. Although the owners haven’t indicated whether they’ll take the wheel themselves, there will be a helm on the upper deck. The same deck contains a welcoming lounge and a bar. Since abundant seating will be in place, the owners and any guests will be able to enjoy a variety of great views. Similarly, they’ll enjoy unimpeded views up on the flying bridge. It’s an extended flying bridge, too, topping a more modern-style superstructure compared to the 85.
Further extensive space comes on the main deck, since the beam is 39 feet (nearly 12 meters). The saloon and dining area (port and starboard, respectively) becomes an indoor-outdoor space with the cockpit. Welcome extra shade is available in the cockpit, with a bar, as well. The owners plan to keep their tender stowed on the aft deck as well, But they’ll be able to set up loose lounges if they wish when it’s in the water.
After a long day’s fun on the water, the primary owners have a full-beam master suite for relaxing. It’s accessible via a port-side passageway from the saloon. Better yet, it has 180-degree views, as well as a forward door leading outside. Notably, their en suite bath is nestled down in the port hull. Youngsters in the family, meanwhile, have a kids’ cabin in the same hull. Four berths are in this cabin, with yet another guest stateroom aft. A final guest stateroom, the captain’s cabin, and a two-person crew cabin all occupy the starboard hull, as does the galley and crew mess.
Altogether, 1,335 square feet (124 square meters) of usable space is aboard the new model.
Finally, to reduce reliance on gensets, the owners are equipping their Long Island 87 yacht with solar panels. Installation is on the flying-bridge roof.
