All custom megayacht clients have ideas that make their yacht their own. However, the highly experienced owners of the yacht Kasif brought ideas to the table in ways that few others ever do.
Turkish for “explorer,” Kasif is indeed an exploration-oriented yacht, with a range upwards of 5,000 nautical miles. The couple who owns her, a captain and an architect, had firm must-haves for the looks and performance. The somewhat rugged styling they wanted complements the need to venture out to offshore fish farms belonging to them. Interestingly, this 137-footer (41-meter) from Bilgin Yachts isn’t solely for pleasure; she’s also for business. Also on the performance side, excellent fuel consumption was a priority. The shipyard says the megayacht consumes only about 8 gph (30 lph) at 8 knots and double that at 10 knots.
For their pleasure cruises, though, the yacht Kasif spreads leisure areas across her three decks in three distinct zones. Firstly, there are the guest accommodations below, including three VIPs and two twin staterooms. Secondly, socializing and dining take place on the main deck, in a customary saloon and dining area. Thirdly, a combination socializing and work area occupies the upper deck, in the form of a second saloon and the owners’ office. The office is akin to a library as well.
“Working with a couple who knew exactly what they wanted made for a challenging project,” notes Enrico Lumini, partner and head of design at Hot Lab. Modern geometries and materials reflect their personalities, he says, but don’t alienate visitors. Additionally, each deck has a common style yet its own features for its own mood. “Our goal, together with the owners, was to create a recognizable, intense style, full of details, but at the same time able to be received by a large audience,” Lumini says.
For example, pastels—in the form of dyed wood—characterize the staterooms on the lower deck. A richer burgundy is pretty evident in the main saloon, specifically on furnishings and the entry arch. Then, for the upper saloon and the owners’ office, the mood is even more serious, with a darker shade. Furthermore, and regardless of room or deck, the yacht Kasif contains Hot Lab’s custom-designed furnishings.
Overall, the owners share a significant love of the sea and all sorts of maritime-related things. They asked Hot Lab to incorporate that feeling throughout their yacht as well. So, for instance, it’s evident in a circular lighting feature on the forward wall in the dining area. “The piece represents a school of fish swimming together,” Lumini points out. Yet another reflection of the theme is in the artwork behind a settee in the beach club. “It’s basically an art piece created in resin overlapped with teak stripes, cut in such a way to re-create a wave.”
Lastly, but certainly not the least of the design elements, the yacht Kasif reminds everyone of the sea in the main entry. “We created a 3D, very abstract version of a big, oceanic fish and made it fully lacquered in a special, glossy purple color with Pirarucu leather in its inner inserts,” Lumini notes. “I think that’s something quite special and quite hard to find somewhere else!”
