Some concept designs come from studios eager to get a foot in the proverbial door. Others incorporate bold, outlandish features purposely to catch the eye. At Mulder Design, the focus is always on something capable of construction first, then styling and amenities that speak to particular buyers. In the case of the concept yacht Project Sharp, the design team leveraged real-life, particular wishes. Altogether, they are for families and friends who treasure time together in a calm, comfortable setting.
The Dutch studio, which recently saw the wrap up of the 18-month, incredibly complex rebuild of the yacht Ursus at Balk Shipyard, settled on a 164-foot (50-meter) LOA. Simultaneously, volume is just beneath the 500-gross-ton threshold. Both of these factors mean the design should find favor with a significant portion of the superyacht-buying population. So, too, should a draft that ensures Caribbean cruising is possible, in addition to other relatively shallow regions.

To turn heads first, though, and encourage a closer look, Mulder Design penned what it terms a “minimalistic, elegant, yet outspoken design.” The styling is long and linear, drawing your eye fore to aft in uninterrupted fashion. Glass bulwarks are further notable, combining with glass-lined rooms on the main and upper decks. More than aesthetic, together they enhance the views of the horizon and surrounding anchorages. Add in ceiling heights of about 7 feet (2.2 meters), and the senses of space and volume are even greater.
A party of 10 can stay aboard the yacht Project Sharp, a total in keeping with what most owners wish for this LOA. Further tied to what owners want, a foredeck pool with a wraparound sunpad is just one of several alfresco amenities. The pool is sizable as well, 21 feet (6.5 meters) long, therefore permitting your kids to race each other to the opposite end. Kids and adults will all enjoy the healthy amount of open deck space fully aft, plus in the beach club. For more privacy, head to the sundeck, or find one of a few cozy spots to curl up with binoculars or a good read.

Since the concept yacht Project Sharp is a starting point, Mulder Design can incorporate a variety of watertoys and specific features. Furthermore, it has already studied three different engine configurations, each of which delivers transatlantic range.
Bas Mulder, Mulder Design’s owner and a naval architect, will be at the Palm Beach International Boat Show for in-person meetings.
