Azimut Magellano 27M Yacht Brings the Mediterranean Loggia to Sea

A Mediterranean loggia traditionally creates a sheltered transition between indoors and outdoors. That architectural idea applies to the Azimut Magellano 27M yacht. In fact, it’s the centerpiece of the third generation of Azimut’s long-range Magellano series.

The 89-footer (27-meter) pairs Finnish designer Jarkko Jämsén, responsible for the exterior, with AMDL CIRCLE for the interiors. Although this is AMDL CIRCLE’s first yacht project, its relationship with Azimut stretches back about a decade. Headed by Michele De Lucchi, the studio created the now-famous wooden brise for the builder’s yacht-show stands. Similarly, wood is a significant part of the Magellano 27M’s living and leisure areas.

This points to the concept of how the yacht is all about living in situ, meaning being in her native environment. Jämsen embraced it as well, designing the 86-footer (26-meter, available with an elongated swim platform) by considering how to make her a more natural complement to the seas she’ll cruise. He didn’t want the sense that the small superyacht was trying to conquer her environment.

Their influence is particularly evident on the main deck of the Azimut Magellano 27M yacht. Rather than treating the saloon and exterior as distinctly separate spaces, the modest superyacht offers what Azimut calls a “loggia over the sea.” Extensive glass, along with wood architectural elements inspired by Mediterranean pergolas and patios, keeps the surrounding scenery prominent. Wood flows throughout the interior, too, particularly light oak with walnut accents in similar stains. A variety of carved, engraved, and otherwise textured surfaces similarly create serenity.

Jämsén takes an equally pared-back approach outside. No excessive flourishes appear, just straight lines and simple, soft curves. In fact, a simple loop sits just above the waterline on each side, signifying fluidity. One notable Magellano family feature remains: wooden louvers at the stern. They both filter sunlight and add warmth to the profile.

The Magellano 27M yacht isn’t solely an exercise in architecture, however. Its Dual Mode hull (similar to a fast-displacement hull) reportedly improves directional stability and softens wave impact. At the same time, it permits efficient operation across a broad speed range. The yacht should cruise comfortably between 16 and 18 knots and exceed 24 knots when desired. She should additionally see a range of 1,000 nautical miles at 12 knots.

Weight reduction contributes to that performance, with approximately 30 percent of surfaces incorporating carbon fiber. Owners can additionally specify Azimut’s Zero Emission Hotel Mode. With this, batteries power onboard systems for part of a day or potentially overnight at anchor without the gensets.

The Magellano series dates to 2009. With the 27M, Azimut is retaining its emphasis on versatile, leisurely cruising while lending a distinctly more architectural identity.
