To say that Ipanema has intricate design details is quite an understatement. From her automotive-inspired styling to her elaborate—and complicated—interior, every square inch of space bears her owner’s input. It’s fitting for a yacht that is meant to get a lot of personal use.
Ipanema started as a concept in 2012 by Mondomarine and Hot Lab Yacht & Design. This particularly owner signed a contract for the 161-footer (49.2-meter) soon after. He shared his love of motorbikes and sporty cars with the design studio to start making her his own. Even if all someone only ever sees Ipanema’s profile, it’s abundantly clear she’s meant to stand out.
Even if someone only ever reads the list of interior materials aboard, it’s also quite clear Ipanema stands out. More than 12 marbles, plus onyx, mahogany, and plentiful fabrics come together, in 37 combinations. Then add in pilasters, friezes, bas-reliefs, and colors and patterns that change from room to room. Complex? An understatement. Mondomarine and Hot Lab had their hands full in ensuring the proper patterns went in the right rooms.
As dizzying to the mind as this all may be, the owner of Ipanema had a laser-like focus on how it would all come together. He wanted the guests in the four twin-bedded staterooms below decks, for example, to each get special treatment. This explains why one cabin is pink, one is yellow, one is green, and one is blue. Even the wall-switch faceplates carry out the colors and patterns. It also explains why each room’s carpeting has a custom design. The owner provided a design reference for what he wanted, and the specialists executed it.
As varied as the interior of Ipanema is, there are some constants. Both are visible here in the bath. Look up toward the ceiling, and you’ll see a red band. It’s actually dental-like detailing. This appears throughout the megayacht. So, too, do the flame-like bas-reliefs, primarily in red. Though, the color does change in the guest staterooms, complying with their individual themes.
Speaking of themes, the color schemes carry on into the crew and other staff areas. Ipanema has two upper-deck cabins for the owner’s staff, plus accommodations for 10 crew and the captain. In each, plus the pilothouse and galley, you’ll see the same fabrics and tones as the guest spaces feature.
To truly understand the intricacy of Ipanema, you need to see her. Step aboard:
