You’re looking at Nazenin V, a nearly 171-footer under construction at RMK Marine in Turkey. (Profile above, sail plan below.) If you’re a sailing aficionado, you’ll probably recognize her as being a Sparkman and Stephens design. What you may not know is that the yacht is shaping up to be, in the words of company president Greg Matzat, the highest-quality yacht yet to emerge from Turkey.
Why such praise? For one, the yard has invested in its infrastructure, but it’s also brought in European and North American management to oversee the facilities themselves, individual projects, and systems subcontractors. “With its new sheds and offices, if you walked into RMK today, you may think you were in Holland,” Matzat says.
RMK, which has experience in steel construction, is breaking new ground with Nazenin V as well, seeing as she’s its first all-aluminum yacht. The hull, which was just turned over within the past few weeks, was built right next to the superstructure, to permit quicker and therefore more efficient installation of systems and other items. Matzat additionally says the hull fairing is akin to that of some of the best-built yachts in the world. When the last of the systems as well as the interior (designed by Redman Whiteley Dixon) are placed, a total of 750 bolts and adhesive will join the superstructure and hull together.
When completed a year from now, Nazenin V will feature traditional teak paneling inside as well as teak trim outside. That won’t be the last you’ll see of her–and I’m not talking out on the water. There’s already a sistership is in the works.
