Considering the 414-foot Octopus will be undergoing extensive maintenance work for the next six months in St. Nazaire, France, yacht-spotters worldwide might be suffering a sense of withdrawal. After all, the Lürssen-built yacht is arguably one of the most talked about and photographed megayachts worldwide.
If you count yourself among the ranks, never fear. This stop-motion video, which seems to have been created by a current or former crewmember, shows her transiting the Panama Canal back in April, so it might satiate your appetite. At the very least, it will give you a good idea of what it’s like to pass through the locks and how there’s a constant flow of vessel traffic no matter what time of day or night (the footage was shot in the wee hours of the day). I particularly liked watching the water in the lock rises within seconds–if only it occurred that quickly in real life!
