To say we’re in the midst of challenging times is an understatement. That’s among the reasons why the International Superyacht Society, VT Flagship (formerly known as Flagship Superyacht Academy), and Wilfred Sultana & Associates, the publisher of Yachting in Malta, are presenting the seminar “The Superyacht Industry: A Challenge, An Opportunity” on April 30. They’re doing so in Malta, a first for the island nation.
Being held in Valletta at the historic Mediterranean Conference Centre, the seminar is intended to give megayacht industry members and the public alike a better understanding of several key issues. One is the economic contribution of the yacht business not just on a local level but on a country level, ranging from businesses like shipyards and marinas to the megayachts themselves. Like every other business, the marine industry is being impacted by the global recession; while this will be part of the discussion, the strengths and future outlook for the yacht business will also be reviewed.
Another key topic: what a superyacht management agency looks for when it comes to recommending a destination to its clients. While the Caribbean and the Med have long been winter and summer destinations, respectively, there are countries within each region–such as Malta–that are trying to attract superyachts for refit work and other short visits as well as longer seasonal visits. The discussion will include information on the role an agency plays when recommending a destination.
Other topics to be reviewed during the seminar: job opportunities within the industry, legal aspects and updates, and what Malta in particular can offer superyacht owners and the general industry. Considering Pelorus (pictured above, entering Grand Harbour) is among the high-profile visitors to the region, this, combined with the other sessions, should prove to be enlightening.
