April is National Child Abuse Awareness Month in the United States. In recognition of this, and in an effort to raise funds for a Florida-based nonprofit dedicated to caring for abused and neglected children, members of the marine industry will participate in a Spin-A-Thon this weekend at two gyms in the Fort Lauderdale area.
On Friday and Saturday, representatives from every end of the business will be spinning their lungs and legs–and, no doubt, their hearts–out at the Spin-A-Thon, in team races to see not only who has the best stamina but also who raises the most money. Participants are obtaining sponsorships from friends, family, and others, and each team additionally provides a fee, all of which goes directly to Kids in Distress (KID). Founded in 1979, KID has a variety of programs to help children who are victims of abuse as well as children and families at risk of it. The organization additionally provides safe and often permanent places for children when they have nowhere else to turn.
Organized by The Triton, MHG Marine Benefits, International Maritime Associates, and Quantum Marine, the two-day event starts Friday at noon at the Zoo Health Club in Fort Lauderdale, with a networking cocktail party, including a silent auction, that evening. Spinning continues Saturday at Just Fit Gym in Plantation, followed by a post-race party and the announcement of the race results. The ultimate goal is to raise $20,000 for KID.
“We are excited that our friends in the marine industry have created such a unique and wonderful idea to support KID,” says Lea Kuhry, special events manager for KID. “We truly appreciate their care and concern for helping children when they need it most.”
If you’re interested in forming a team to participate, or you simply wish to serve as a sideline supporter by paying a $20 entrance fee going directly to KID, contact Susan Hult at (954) 661-1224 or via e-mail.
