Ten years to the day that Sunseeker launched its 105, and 12 years after it began designing yachts exceeding 100 feet, the British builder presented a new flagship, the 40 Metre Yacht, measuring 131 feet.
The unveiling was last Friday, at the Southampton Boat Show. If you’re familiar with the previous flagship, the 37 Meter, you’ll notice similar lines. They share other similarities, too. Both are tridecks, and even though the 40 Metre Yacht displaces 200 tons, she’s said to hit the same speed as the 37, which is 24 knots. (It’s interesting to note that Robert Braithwaite, Sunseeker’s managing director, says a prototype tested in May actually hit 31 knots.) Power comes courtesy of 4000 Series MTUs, and range is said to be 1,500 nautical miles at 10 to 12 knots.
Of course, the 40 Metre Yacht isn’t just a larger version of the 37. The main-deck master and the saloon each offer optional balconies that form at the touch of a button, a first for Sunseeker. There are also three layout options for the master, with two differing only where the bed is placed: facing forward vs. aft. They each contain a small study/office in a fore-aft configuration to starboard, at the suite’s entry. The third layout option eliminates the study and instead creates a sitting area within the bedroom. A total of 12 people can be accommodated, with four guest staterooms available in a handful of configurations below decks. Nine crew are housed fully forward on the same deck, with a dedicated staircase in a foyer leading up to the galley.
Other features you’d expect to find on a megayacht of this size include an open-air sundeck (Sunseeker terms it the “skydeck”) with a hot tub and wetbar, and a skylounge one level below.
