Strand Craft certainly knows how to get attention. The builder, which previously focused on retro-styled runabouts and motorboats up to about 40 feet LOA, decided to test the megayacht market last year. It did so by introducing a concept project, the Strand Craft 122. Priced at about $24 million, the Strand Craft 122 was sleek and sporty, but of most interest was the fact that she came complete with a custom sportscar, designed to match. Bloggers and print editors from all walks of life drooled over the idea… which reportedly led to at least one contract being signed.
In the same spirit of the Strand Craft 122, the builder has teamed again with designer Eduard Gray of industrial-product design firm Gray Design for its newest concept, the Strand Craft 166.
The video here showcases how the megayacht is meant to stand apart from the crowd. She embodies automobile-inspired lines; check out the curvy, wheel-well-like “haunches,” as Strand Craft refers to them. Of course, she also comes with a custom sportscar in her transom garage. While neither Gray nor Strand Craft have built a demo version of the car, they expect it to be capable of 196-mph speeds given a powerful 620-hp V8. If you’d rather tote something other than the “supercar tender,” the garage can be designed to accommodate the luxury vehicle of your choice: a Ferrari or Lamborghini, for example. Strand Craft says the garage can be designed around a typical tender, too.
More features setting the Strand Craft 166 apart: a hideaway flying bridge and radar mast. (The video shows them emerging from the sleek, low profile.) There’s also virtually wall-to-wall use of red leather inside, including in the five staterooms. Offered as an option: what Strand Craft terms Japanese Samurai tread leather, which incorporates Vectran, a textile known for its strength and moisture resistance.
For the ultimate tie-in to the fast and furious lifestyle, Strand Craft says the 166 should hit a top speed of 40 knots, powered by twin 5,766-hp MTU engines connected to a 5,600-hp booster and waterjet drives.
Enjoy the video, a real teaser if there ever was one. It gives brief glimpses at the above, as well as the hot tub and bar hidden beneath slide-out foredeck partitions.
