A little more than a year from now, the island of Cyprus will see its first luxury-oriented marina welcome its first megayacht.
Limassol Marina, located on the southern portion of the island, is being developed in conjunction with Camper & Nicholsons Marinas. When completed, it will accommodate both power and sailing yachts to 100 meters (328 feet). All the conveniences that megayachts owners and crews expect—including WiFi, cable TV, plus freshwater- and electricity hookups—are being provided in each slip. Limassol Marina will also feature a drydock and sheds for minor maintenance and repairs.
In keeping with the philosophy that a marina should be a destination, not simply a place to park, Limassol Marina will also feature waterfront residences. Several of the homes will have slips adjacent to their property. Shops and restaurants are also being built.
The city of Limassol itself should further attract interest. Ancient excavation sites, including a Greco-Roman amphitheater dating to the second century B.C., are there, as are castles dating to the 13th century. Walking tours are available of the older portions of the city. In fact, since Limassol’s port is the central one in Cyprus and a major port overall in the Med, tourism is strong. It’s home to hopping nightclubs and high-end hotels, too.
Then, of course, there are the highlights of Cyprus itself. English is one of three official languages spoken, the other two being Greek and Turkish. (Cyprus was a British colony from 1878 to 1960.) Cyprus’ proximity to Turkey, 47 miles (75 kilometers) to the north, means it’s within reach of other popular cruising grounds.
