Moll Vell, the megayacht marina being developed in the shadows of the famed cathedral in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, is still many months away from its official opening, but it’s already hosted one significant event and making up for lost time.
Moll Vell (a website is in the works) is on the site of a previous marina that was in use until the 1990s but fell into disrepair. Between the harbor authority taking quite a long time to decide its fate and further delays from the agency in issuing permits to Amarres Deportivos, the developer that won the contract for redevelopment, the transformation into Moll Vell didn’t start until last year.
Despite that, Amarres Deportivos—formed by the managers of Pantalan del Mediterraneo, another marina in Palma, as well as Banco Pastor, the second-oldest bank in Spain—has made good progress. All 26 berths have been refurbished, accommodating yachts from 65’6” to 131 feet (20 to 40 meters, respectively), with 24 of them being for megayachts. In fact, the video below shows them fully occupied, shot during the Palma Superyacht Brokerage & Charter Show this past May.
Oscar Siches, joint managing partner of Moll Vell, adds that nearly 722 feet (220 meters) of tie-up docking has also been added, with double bollards and stowage for keeping cables and hoses out of sight. Come the end of October, an annex building with offices, bars, and restaurants will be finished. Six weeks later, a park-like area surrounding it will be done, too.
“In transforming Moll Vell, we are upgrading an area of Palma that has been neglected for a long time—too long,” Siches says. “It will become an integral part of Palma’s fabric.”
