The megayacht seen here is the Columbus 146, the first in a new series of expedition motoryachts from Broward Shipyard and Donald Starkey of Donald Starkey Design.
The name Columbus was deliberately chosen to call to mind the famed explorer of the same name. After all, as Broward’s management team puts it, Christopher Columbus introduced Europeans to shores they never knew existed. Broward Shipyard believes the Columbus 146, as well as the rest of the series, will attract European and other overseas buyers.
To be constructed of aluminum, the Columbus 146 will bear a beam of 30 feet (9.15 meters) and a shallow draft of 6’8” (2.05 meters) at half load. As the megayacht’s model name suggests, LOA is 146 feet (44.5 meters). Some customization will be permitted for systems and the interior layout, of course. However, clients should be served well by the suggested specifications from Broward and Donald Starkey’s vision for the interior. Besides a main-deck master (above) with separate wardrobes and an office/library, the arrangement calls for two VIPs and two other guest staterooms.
Owners who are environmentally minded and even maintenance-minded should note that Broward plans all exterior decks to feature Esthec rather than teak.
To encourage expeditions, the Columbus 146 will be powered by twin 1,299-hp Caterpillar C32 ACERTs. Broward expects a cruising speed of 14 knots and a range of more than 3,000 nautical miles.
Once a contract is signed, build time should be 24 to 28 months.
