Prince Khaled bin Sultan, the owner of the Golden Fleet of aircraft, yachts, and megayachts, has received this year’s Perseus Award, given to yacht owners who are not just committed to but also contribute toward marine wildlife conservation.
Prince Khaled is the founder of the Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation, dedicated to ocean conservation. Established in 2000, the organization has been assisting scientists around the world in learning more about the world’s oceans, including their plant and animal life. Prince Khaled has made the Golden Fleet’s Golden Odyssey, Golden Shadow, and Golden Osprey available to these scientists. On occasion the prince has even joined them on their expeditions, personally diving alongside them. The Living Oceans Foundation presents the scientific findings to the governments where the yachts and megayachts are traveling, to help them make better marine-resource management decisions. Over the past several years, these countries have included the Seychelles, the Bahamas, the Galapagos, Jamaica, plus St. Kitts and Nevis. Currently the Living Oceans Foundation is mapping and surveying coral reefs in French Polynesia.
“It is a great honor to be recognized for my involvement in marine conservation,” says Prince Khaled. “It is a privilege to be able to support such worthwhile work and to contribute to ocean conservation in a meaningful and tangible way.” The prince joins the ranks of Perseus Award recipients like Bill and Shannon Joy, the owners of the sailing superyacht Ethereal.
