While stormy weather kept the competitors in the fifth-annual Perini Navi Cup tied to the dock on day two, days one and three late last week provided for spirited superyacht racing.
Hosted by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) in Sardinia, the Perini Navi Cup brings together sailing yachts built by the Italian shipyard. This year’s regatta attracted 15 Perini Navis, including one of the oldest as well as the newest: Corelia, built more than 20 years ago, and Seahawk, handed over just a few weeks ago. They raced against Perini Navi megayachts like Maltese Falcon, P2, Tamsen, Xnoi, Panthalassa, Parsifal IV, Silencio, Zenji, and Jasali II.
Don’t mistake a race for bragging rights to be a gentle cruise around the harbor: Some of the megayachts had professional racing crew aboard, including at least one America’s Cup sailor. And no matter who was at the helm, the competition was high. Day one saw P2 cross the finish line first, though Silencio was the actual winner based on corrected time. Day three, Silencio was victorious once again, and she therefore won the coveted Perini Navi Cup. P2’s crew and owner (who raced aboard) took second, while Parsifal IV came in third. Other competitors didn’t go away empty-handed, either. Maltese Falcon was given the Pommery Award for Fair Play, for example, and the yacht club itself presented the YCCS Trophy to Xnoi for being the top-placed YCCS member.
Enjoy the action from the first day.
