Affectionately known as FLIBS, the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show is the world’s largest in-water event and the most significant show stateside for megayachts. Among the megayachts premiering at this year’s show, at the end of the month, is the Cheoy Lee 87 Express Sportbridge.
Like the Cheoy Lee models that preceded her in recent years, namely the Alpha Express 76 and Alpha Express 76 Flybridge, the 87 Express Sportbridge bears exterior design and naval architecture by Michael Peters Yacht Design. That in turn means she’s engineered for performance, befitting her sporty styling, which Peters says he was given carte blanche to create. Cheoy Lee states that each of the engine choices (twin 1,900-hp Caterpillar C32 ACERTs are standard) permit speeds of 30 knots or greater.
As the 87 Express Sportbridge’s name suggests, the megayacht is meant for outdoor enjoyment. Lounging should be the order of the day on the flying bridge, which also features a helm station. More relaxing takes place on the aft deck, with facing settees and a retractable awning if you and your guests are seeking shade. Also sure to attract some buyers: an optional hot tub here. Further noteworthy, when the hot tub isn’t in use, it gets covered by a sunpad. Of course, the Cheoy Lee 87 Express Sportbridge can tote a tender or PWC, too, stowed in a garage and automatically deployed.
For interior design, Cheoy Lee turned to Luiz de Basto, who was also responsible for the 76. From the four staterooms below decks, including a full-beam master, to the saloon and even the crew’s quarters, the design incorporates woods and stonework. Maximizing the appeal of the main deck are two factors. First, the sliding doors aft can remain open. Second, the galley is arranged more like a bar, for a comfortably casual atmosphere.
