When Cheoy Lee introduced the Alpha 76 Express in 2011, the model caught a lot of people by surprise. Here was a sleeker, dramatically different style, and a speedy yacht at that. After all, Cheoy Lee is known for more traditional designs and performers. The surprise was well received, and having added an Alpha 76 Flybridge model this past fall, Cheoy Lee is now building an Alpha 87 Express Sport (ES for short).
Like her smaller sister, the Cheoy Lee Alpha 87 ES is an express, bearing naval architecture by Michael Peters Yacht Design and interior design by Luiz De Basto. Peters is well known for a variety of spirited performers, and De Basto is known for sophisticated, contemporary atmospheres. Like the Alpha 76, the Alpha 87 ES bears plenty of glass to bring the outside in.
Cheoy Lee finished the hull mold for the Alpha 87 ES in July and began laying up the all-fiberglass megayacht by October. While the builder hasn’t released anticipated performance figures, the overall Alpha series was created for top speeds exceeding 35 knots.
As for the general arrangement, four staterooms will be below decks, and both alfresco and inside relaxation and dining will be available, in keeping with the Alpha 76 Express and other similar designs. It might be safe to assume there will be other commonalities with the Alpha 76 Express, too. Aboard that yacht, the galley is situated in an atrium-like setting, forward of and below the helm. And, sliding doors between the interior and the cockpit can be kept open, to accentuate the open feeling.
The Cheoy Lee Alpha 87 ES will debut at this fall’s Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show.
