The 138-foot (42-meter) Sofia was delivered by Moonen Shipyards last year, the largest in a succession of megayachts for the same owner. That owner started out with a Moonen 84. He then “graduated” to a Moonen 97. Before too long, the owner of Sofia (he named all of his yachts Sofia, too) decided to build an even larger boat with Moonen Shipyards. In 2009, he signed a contract for a 131-footer (40-meter). He envisioned her toting a two-person submarine, so that family and friends could enjoy the undersea world even if they didn’t dive, like he did. That two-person sub, though, wouldn’t be able to accommodate more than just one guest. So, a three-person sub was needed for the new Sofia. That, in turn, meant the new Sofia would need to be larger.
Thus, the 131-footer became this 138-footer.
This video showcases Sofia while she’s out cruising. You’ll see her three-person U-Boat Worx sub, too. It sits on the swim platform, which contains a hidden crane to launch the sub. That same crane can be used as the sub’s boarding platform, too.
While you don’t get to see any of the megayacht’s interiors, you can click over to our Megayacht News Onboard feature on Sofia. Art-Line Interiors imbued her with abundant architectural details and open, flowing rooms. She feels far larger than her 138 feet.
