In light of growing megayacht interest in Southeast Asia, the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club is reconfiguring its marina and clubhouse.
Currently, the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club has four berths for megayachts to 197 feet (60 meters). Power and sailing yachts alike can visit, as long as their draft is relatively shallow. Low tide in the marina basin is 9’8” (3 meters). Word of the expansion comes from Asia Pacific Superyachts, a yacht agent assisting megayachts visiting the region. Unfortunately, Asia Pacific Superyachts doesn’t have the number of new slips being added. Neither does the website of the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club.
Regardless, we do know that the redevelopment, which begins next week, will see the addition of new power systems for the docks and new pump-outs. Fuel and water will still be available at the docks, as will high-speed wi-fi.
The Royal Langkawi Yacht Club will further reconstruct its main clubhouse, as illustrated here. A lobby and reception area meant to impress are being added on the first floor. Currently a pool and the popular restaurant/bar Charlie’s Place are on the lowest level. The second floor of the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club will be devoted to eight guest rooms, four with balconies providing views of the marina and ocean beyond. The clubhouse is also gaining a third floor, which may contain boutiques.
The redevelopment should wrap up by the end of October.
This isn’t the first expansion for the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club. The club opened in 1996 with just 44 slips. It now has 200 berths. Its proximity to customs and immigration—a few minutes’ walk—plus duty-free shops and a number of businesses has made it attractive to a number of boaters and yacht owners over the years. The Langkawi archipelago is also a highlight, consisting of more than 100 lush islands, only two of which are inhabited.
