Black Pearl does it again. The largest sailing superyacht in the world has the yachting industry, and yacht watchers worldwide, buzzing, now that she’s deployed her sails.
Fellow yachting website Yacht Harbour, which publishes a mix of industry news and consumer news, secured the video below, sharing it via Facebook. Within an hour of us sharing it on our own Facebook page, more than 2,000 people had seen it.
As we’ve explained previously, Black Pearl employs a DynaRig. Most yachting enthusiasts hadn’t heard of the DynaRig until the 289-foot (88-meter) Maltese Falcon hit the water in 2006. This version of a square rigger, created in the 1960s, employs three self-standing, rotating masts. When the crew deploys the sails, no gaps are detectable where they end and the yards begin. Therefore, from a short distance away, Black Pearl will appear as if she has three significant-size sails, one on each mast. In reality, she should be quite aerodynamically efficient, too.
Black Pearl measures 348 feet (106 meters), and has a more-than-healthy volume of 3,000 gross tons. Her distinctive, sculpted design comes from a powerhouse combination of Dykstra Naval Architects, Ken Freivokh Design, Nuvolari-Lenard, and the owner.
As much as words help convey a concept, sometimes visuals do all the talking. Watch as the crew put Black Pearl through her paces, and enjoy.
