A big boat typically has big plans. That seems the case for Game Changer. The new owner of this 227-footer (70-meter), built on spec, has sent her back to her build team for tailored touches.
Game Changer is the fourth Yacht Support vessel so far in her size range. Her predecessors are Garçon, from 2012, plus Intrepid and Fast & Furious, both delivered in 2016. Marketed by Amels, these rugged global travelers see construction by Amels’ parent company, Damen. They can serve as tandem cruisers with overflow toys and extra personnel alongside a traditional yacht. They can also serve as primary yachts themselves. Either way, Yacht Support vessels have certified helicopter pads and immense on-deck areas for submarines and significant-size tenders.
Unfortunately, neither Damen nor Amels have detailed the changes the owner wants. Game Changer is currently in Gorinchem, The Netherlands, at a Damen Shipyards’ facility. But, we expect he or she will keep the heli hangar. This helps in protecting the craft from the elements. The hangar also contains refueling capabilities.
Whatever tenders and toys the owner selects, nearly 2,691 square feet (250 square meters) of on-deck space can handle them. A heavy-duty crane is on deck, too, for launch and retrieval. It can hoist personal submarines, speedboats, and more, for example. An additional 1,184 square feet (110 square meters) of toy and dive stowage sits below decks.
Also below deck, Game Changer has nicely outfitted crew’s quarters. Twenty-two people get accommodations. Damen and Amels planned the spaces so that they’ll take care of crew or a combination of crew and the owner’s personal staff. On a related note, overall with the Yacht Support series, customers can also request extra guest staterooms.
The timeline for Game Changer’s stay is also unknown. Regardless, Mark Vermuelen, the Yacht Support product director, says that generally speaking, the team can turn things around quickly. “We have the breadth of experience and facilities to offer fast customization with the same team that built her,” he explains. “So owners get a brand new Damen Yacht Support vessel that meets their unique requirements, but within a matter of months—not years.” Rose Damen, Damen’s commercial director, adds, “It’s exciting to see how these clients are using Damen vessels to realize their vision of yachting.”
The next Yacht Support available for fast customization is the 180-foot (55-meter) Adventure. She splashes before the summer.
