Ida Pfeiffer was a woman well ahead of her time. Born in the late 18th century in Vienna, she had an unconventional early life, visiting Palestine and Egypt at the age of five. As an adult, she traveled through the Middle East, Scandinavia, and even around the world. She did so, more surprisingly, all before the age of 50. Pfeiffer continued traveling, completing a second around-the-world journey, and publishing her travel journals, too, until her death at age 61. This bold journeywoman is the inspiration for the Ida Pfeiffer megayacht concept, penned by Gill Schmid Design. She’s available for build at Dörries Yachts.
The 229’7” (70-meter) design is no mere explorer in styling, however. Rather, she’s spec’d for an ice-class hull and diesel-electric propulsion. The design and build teams, along with central agent Globe Regal Yachting, envision the owners and guests spending most of their time adventuring in cold climes, in fact.
Dörries Yachts is no stranger to adventurous owners. It completed outfitting on the 351-foot (107-meter) Ulysses and is wrapping up work on her successor, the 381-foot (116-meter) Ulysses. Just as each of those are long-range cruisers, so, too, is the Ida Pfeiffer concept. Anticipate her seeing upwards of 7,000 miles at displacement speeds.
Bearing a beam of nearly 42 feet (12.75 meters), the megayacht naturally awaits owners’ input for interior arrangement and design. Global Regal Yachting indicates that she’ll meet the Large Yacht Code LY3 classification standards. Gross tonnage will be approximately 1,500, too. Given both of these, the Ida Pfeiffer concept therefore is meant for no more than 12 passengers. Gill Schmid Design suggests five VIP suites accompanying the master suite. It also suggests a crew head count of 16.
Of course, a proper explorer yacht carries a wealth of toys for close-to-shore adventures. Two 46-foot (14-meter) boats can serve as primary tenders. Traditional PWCs can go aboard as well, as can a dive-support boat and a Triton sub. For true adventures, though, the Ida Pfeiffer concept calls for an Icon sea plane and a helicopter, which has its own hangar. The A-frame device seen aft in the renderings above take care of toy launches and retrievals.
The megayacht can see delivery 38 months after contract signing.
