Last month, we gave you a peek inside the newest Dominator 28M Illumen, Cadet V. This, despite her being a few weeks from launch. Launch day for the 90-footer (27.35-meter) has finally arrived, just this week.
Dominator Yachts created the Illumen series to be a lighter-weight, better-performing semi-custom series. For instance, it uses carbon fiber composite construction, versus the more typical all fiberglass construction. Carbon fiber augments strength while saving weight. That weight savings, of course, positively impacts performance. The first 28M Illumen, Kalliente, reportedly tops out at 21 knots under MTU power. (Kalliente saw delivery last year.) Overall, series buyers can choose among Caterpillar, MAN, or MTU engines, for top speeds approaching 28 knots.
Further distinguishing the Illumen series, and therefore Cadet V, Dominator uses a blade-like bulbous bow. The shipyard also uses Fortjes pod drives as part of the propulsion package. Pod drives make maneuvering easier.
Since she’s a semi-custom megayacht, Cadet V reflects her owner’s distinct personality. He is an ardent admirer of the artist Stefano Curto, who’s known for using Swarovski crystals (thousands of them) in his work. Curto likes to capture and play with light, including the spectrum of colors that stones reflect. He created a few pieces specifically for Cadet V.
In fact, one of the most striking pieces he made is a huge, starburst-like design (above). It hangs in the saloon, and it incorporates a variety of rich blue tones. “Knowing where on the yacht the art would be positioned and that they would form part of a journey inspired me to create art made to shine in the sea,” the artist explains.
While we do not know how many staterooms Cadet V has, the Illumen 28M series provides a choice of four or five. Regardless of total, the master suite features a large skylight, complementing the floor-to-ceiling windows. In addition, up to four crewmembers get accommodated aboard.
