Megayachts take on all sorts of shapes and sizes, from maxi opens to conservative cruisers and adventure-seeking explorers. Despite the popularity of sportfishing, especially in the United States, few follow traditional sportfisherman styling. Mary P is among the exceptions to the rule. Launched a decade ago, the 122-footer (37-meter) still reigns as one of the world’s largest sportfishing megayachts. Fresh from a refit, she’s showing off her fishing features at this week’s Palm Beach International Boat Show. Here, we’re giving you a first look at her spaces—her owners have never previously permitted full publicity.
An all-aluminum megayacht built by Trinity Yachts, Mary P replaced another large sportfishing yacht. Bearing the same name, she measured 86 feet (26 meters). Since backing down on big fish was crucial, Trinity and naval architect Doug Sharp engineered her to do so at 10 knots. Of course, in true sportfishing tradition, the controls are on the flying bridge, so that the captain can keep a trained eye on what anglers in the cockpit are trying to catch. Speaking of trained eyes, Mary P also incorporates forward-looking sonar. Finally, since she’s pursued night fishing, underwater lights come into play, too.
After a hard day’s fishing, the owners and up to six guests have an advantage inside over other sportfishermen. Mary P has a volume akin to a more traditional motoryacht. (Sportfishermen tend to be narrower.) Here, too, the owners took advantage of true custom construction, working with interior designer Judy Bell-Davis. They selected a variety of woods, such as oak burl, zebrawood (named for its striped appearance), and sen (a pale wood from Japan). In addition, they requested etched glass, depicting sea scenes, for the master bath and other staterooms.
Enjoy this armchair tour of Mary P. If you’re a fishing fanatic, note that she should top out at 25 knots and see a 2,600-nautical-mile range at 10.5 knots, with Caterpillar power.
The asking price for Mary P is $15.5 million, listed via the central agency of Merle Wood & Associates.
