With IPS propulsion promising a top speed upwards of 30 knots, the Extra 86 Fast is true to her name. The new megayacht is further true to her name for providing extra-beamy and extra-open areas for owners and guests to spend time together.
The first in the Extra Yachts series, the Extra 76, made her debut last year. (While the Extra series started under the ISA Yachts brand, it is now a brand of its own.) Similar in style and in purpose to her smaller sister, the Extra 86 Fast has styling by Francesco Guida. She also provides a 21’6” (6.6-meter) beam within an 85’3” (26-meter) length. It’s on par with what megayachts exceeding 100 feet (30.5 meters) have elbowroom-wise.
While the yacht houses a party of eight in four staterooms, including a full-beam master suite, the real emphasis of the Extra 86 Fast is indulgence in the outdoors. The main aft deck is longer than usual, for two reasons. One, the superstructure is pushed forward. Two, alfresco areas extend under the flying-bridge overhang. You get 538 square feet (50 square meters) of beach-club-like ambiance across this aft deck, too, which splits over three levels toward the water. Precluding the need to head inside, the galley sits aft, in proximity to all of these areas.
Of course, other alfresco spaces come into play as well. At the bow, the Extra 86 Fast has a settee and a sunpad, for enjoying all day long straight into happy hour. On the flying bridge, meanwhile, you can dine, sun, or simply enjoy the views, even chat with your captain at the second helm station. (Two crew cabins with three berths are onboard.)
As mentioned above, the Extra 86 Fast more than earns her “Fast” designation due to her performance. Triple Volvo Penta IPS 1350s provide propulsion. If you’re thinking a triple-engine configuration is a fuel guzzler, it’s not where the IPS system is concerned. It’s actually proven to be more fuel-efficient.
You can see this first Extra 86 Fast at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September.
