Yes, you read that headline correctly. The design studio Design Unlimited has lent its styling expertise to a tender. What’s more, the Pulse 63 is an electric RIB. It follows in the footsteps of a successful smaller sister that debuted last year.
Measuring 20’7” (6.3 meters), the Pulse 63 comes from UK-based RS Electric Boats. While its in-house team engineered the hull, which it says can provide a 100-nautical-mile range, the company turned to Design Unlimited for the rest of the look. Mark Tucker, Design Unlimited’s creative director, explains, “Our involvement with the project came about through our personal connection to RS Sailing, the sister company of RS Electric Boats.” It turns out that the studio has owned eight of the sister company’s boats over the years. “We jumped at the opportunity to be involved with this revolutionary electric RIB,” Tucker adds.
Specifically, the studio chose colors and graphics, plus designed the tubes, ergonomics of the seating and water access, and other aspects that change according to configuration. RS Electric Boats makes the Pulse 63 available in four models: Superyacht, Leisure, Commercial, and Coaching. Even within each of these models, further tailoring is possible.
Regardless of configuration, a few design aspects stand out. For instance, the drive system sits flush in the transom. Therefore, you have more room to move around inside the RIB. Additionally, the Hyperdrive battery pack can recharge in just under an hour when using a three-phase charging point. That way you can get out and hit the reported top speed of 23 knots faster. If you’re not in a rush, though, it can charge overnight at the dock, needing eight hours to be ready to go.
Better yet, RS Electric Boats and Design Unlimited use environmentally minded materials for the Pulse 63. For instance, the hull components are PET, which is the most recycled plastic around the world, along with flax fiber and wood. These, along with the no-emission electric power, are steps in a better direction.
