Considering this video of the first hull of the Nordhavn 80 had been viewed 14,000 times in its first three days, plenty of people want to go long-range voyaging. More so, though, the venerable oceangoing-yacht builder packs a lot of unexpected features into this megayacht.
A first-time collaboration between Nordhavn and Vripack, the project is what the builder considers its own “answer to the petite superyacht.” Certainly, she is a rugged-looking, bluewater-capable boat, true to Nordhavn tradition. Additionally, she is a yacht where the owners can be the operators, too, or have a captain and a single crewmember onboard for navigating duties. However, she stands apart from her sisterships in upping the ante in terms of her luxury features.
Take, for instance, an elevator connecting all of her decks. As you’ll hear in this tour with project manager Dave Harlow, the elevator is “like a tube at a bank.” It operates via air suction. Most builders, even superyacht shipyards, with projects in this size range simply don’t incorporate elevators onboard. (LOA for the Nordhavn 80 is 80’8”, or 24.58 meters.) Also, when is the last time you saw a second galley onboard—and not a crew mess? The skylounge contains a dedicated cooking area that nearly blends in as more of a bar. (Don’t like it? No problem; put your suite here instead.)
Then there are eminently practical features. Six steering stations (yes, six) are standard aboard the Nordhavn 80, including an aft-deck station. While a crew dinette sits in the main galley aboard this hull, picture a big pantry in its place if you’ll undertake global trips.
Further note that while hull number one has classically rich woods, you can opt for whatever interior design you wish. Vripack, for example, has tailored a contemporary design that you can preview in the link above.
