Why use LEDs when you can use lasers? Phi’s laser light display should convince more than a few megayacht owners that there’s a better way to light things up.
The different approach should come as no surprise, considering this 192-footer (58.5-meter) motoryacht is different in many respects. Despite her LOA, she is below the 500-gross-ton mark, for example. In fact, based on current classification rules, she is the longest motoryacht in her tonnage category. Furthermore, her interior design, space planning, performance, and dimensions all comply with the principle of phi (commonly called the Golden Ratio). In simple terms, it’s a formula of harmony in design.
Phi’s laser light display comes from the shipyard team in conjunction with a specialist lighting company, Fibr8. Fibr8, based in The Netherlands, has created a number of laser-light solutions for maritime applications. While lasers normally generate a straight beam of light, its solution uses bendable fiber from Corning. Therefore, it allows for a wide variety of 3D line effects—as you’ll see with the megayacht in these clips.
Interestingly, Fibr8’s lighting solution is less than 1 millimeter in diameter, about the thickness of a dime. Plus, it can typically light up an uninterrupted line stretching more than 164 feet (50 meters), depending on the application. These are some of the advantages that the company and Royal Huisman put to use aboard Phi. Further noteworthy, Phi’s laser light display has no gaps in the light beam, an issue that plagues LEDs, since they can fail.
Look for more Royal Huisman customers to opt for laser lighting, too. The shipyard is making the technology available for new builds and refits.
In the meantime, Phi is on her maiden voyage. “The delivery is a moment of great pride for our team,” says Jan Timmerman, Royal Huisman’s CEO. “It is also bittersweet, having to say farewell to Phi, as her creation has been part of our daily lives for several years.” He continues, “We wish Phi’s owner and everyone onboard fair winds, following seas, and a great experience.”
