Megayachts require mega-size refit sheds, so it’s fitting that The Boat Works christened its largest facilities Mega Sheds. They represent the tallest refit sheds on Australia’s Gold Coast, too.
The four structures can accommodate yachts to 164 feet (50 meters) LOA, plus have a nearly 66-foot-high (20-metre-high) clearance. Additionally, each of the Mega Sheds is 52 feet (16 meters) wide. These dimensions are all crucial, to allow for lifting materials and structures up over the yachts, plus providing enough space for scissor lifts, scaffolding, and even containers for toys and gear alongside.
“To meet demand, we accelerated our plans,” says Tony Longhurst, The Boat Works’ owner. Just two years ago, his shipyard built what it calls Super Sheds, but requests quickly began outpacing capacity. For perspective, the Mega Sheds are 16 feet (5 meters) taller than the other refit sheds. They’re already in use, too. Beluga, a Moonen motoryacht, was the first to arrive this week (above). Additionally, the Ocea motoryacht Espiritu Santo came in this week for a three-month refit.
Several more megayachts will arrive, soon. For instance, Horizon Yachts’ Australia dealership will finish outfitting several deliveries there. Alexander Marine Australia, Ocean Alexander’s local dealer, will do the same with a new 27E in mid-April. The Mega Sheds’ proximity to The Boat Works’ chandlery and a variety of regional contractors makes these options attractive.
So, too, does their proximity to marinas like Sanctuary Cove Marina and Southport Yacht Club. Steve Sammes, Sanctuary Cove’s general manager, says, “The feedback from our berth holders is that The Boat Works’ facilities are world-class, which further strengthens the offering in our region. Our relationship with The Boat Works means our customers can access this premium maintenance and refit facility within a convenient distance from the marina.”
Brett James, the general manager of Southport Yacht Club, meanwhile, says the Mega Sheds’ opening is “perfectly timed, coinciding with the Mega Berth” at his site. The Mega Berth is a 535-foot-long (163-meter-long) slip (above). It’s the largest of its kind in all of Australia.
Finally, captains and crew should appreciate The Boat Works’ hospitality. It provides them with a VIP lounge, a few restaurants, a beach, and even a car museum. Furthermore, a gym, a barber, and a masseuse are available, as are courtesy cars to head to Gold Coast beaches and Surfers Paradise.
