Are you a fan of the award-winning writer and director Ruben Östlund? How about comedic satire, or just seeing a superyacht on the big screen? Triangle of Sadness should be on your must-see list. Although you may want to avoid eating popcorn while watching (we’ll get to that), you’ll see the famed Christina O.
The movie, which hit American theaters on October 7, won the prestigious Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival last May. Triangle of Sadness follows a young couple who are models, one additionally having a side job as a social-media influencer. That job gets them invited for a luxury superyacht cruise, alongside what the producers call a rogues’ gallery of super-rich guests. They include a British arms dealer and his wife, a software creator, and a Russian fertilizer oligarch (who describes his business quite colorfully). One of the better comedic scenes involves a self-important female passenger insisting to the captain (Woody Harrelson) that the yacht’s sails need washing.
The initially Instagram-worthy trip turns into a nightmare for all aboard, however. A storm during dinner tosses the yacht forcefully (and induces projectile vomiting and toilet eruptions). The below-decks dynamic turns after the guests and a crewmember become stranded on a desert island.
Triangle of Sadness, which shot alfresco scenes aboard the yacht, isn’t the first time Christina O stars on a screen. In fact, she recently appeared in the fifth season of the Netflix series The Crown. Her fame extends well earlier than that, of course, due to her history. The late Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis acquired her when she was a decommissioned naval frigate for just $34,000. He had her refitted into a luxury yacht and entertained the world’s who’s-who onboard. For instance, singers Maria Callas and Frank Sinatra enjoyed her luxury areas. So, too, did actresses Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor, plus UK prime minister Winston Churchill.
Christina O is available for charter via Morley Yachts.
