August 26 is the day that Mechanic fans have been anxiously waiting for—as have yachting fans. The movie Mechanic: Resurrection may be the latest Jason Statham thriller, but an equally high-profile “star” is the superyacht SuRi.
Mechanic: Resurrection stars Statham as hitman Arthur Bishop. The plot: Bishop must assassinate three people on different continents, making each look like an accident, to save his love’s life. While filming in Thailand two years ago, the producers shot a number of scenes aboard and around the 208-foot (63.4-meter) SuRi. They secured her for the shoot thanks to Yacht Solutions. Also based in Thailand, the yacht-consultancy agency has worked with a number of film and TV production companies working there over the years.
It’s interesting to note that originally, a sailing superyacht was set to star in Mechanic: Resurrection. This, according to Gareth Twist, managing director of Yacht Solutions. The producers then changed their minds, to a motoryacht—specifically, an expedition-style motoryacht. Enter SuRi.
SuRi started life as a commercial vessel in 1978. Yacht service came following a conversion in 2007. She has expansive spaces for a flotilla of toys, including an entire hangar plus a helideck. The overall 38-foot (11.6-meter) beam makes her look and feel broad-shouldered.
The publicity surrounding Mechanic: Resurrection so far doesn’t mention what role SuRi serves. Twist did reveal in 2014 that fight scenes were staged aboard her top deck. You can see some of that action around the 1:30 mark. SuRi appears again in a flash (literally) at 1:56. As a bonus, around the half-minute mark, you can see a handful of other superyachts. See if you can name any of them.
