The third-largest sailing superyacht in Vitters Shipyard’s history is a few months from delivery. Fittingly, she has a name reflective of her big size. The yacht Maximus is prepping for launch and, subsequently, her first set of sea trials.
A performance ketch, the 194-footer (59-meter) has classically appealing styling. Specifically, she has a flush deck and a raised deckhouse. Exterior design and naval architecture are by Germán Frers of Frers Design. The studio gave the yacht a lifting keel, with the deepest draft of 26 feet (8 meters) aiding upwind performance. The shallowest draft, meanwhile, of 16 feet (5 meters) is for maneuvering in harbors and bays when docking or anchoring. Additionally, the design studio, Vitters, Southern Spars, and Doyle Sails all collaborated for sailplan optimization. The yacht Maximus will have square-top sails and should perform well in a variety of wind and weather conditions, with fingertip steering.
In fact, the owners requested that their yacht serve both cruising and racing desires. Therefore, the installation of all of the sailing equipment on deck ensures the superyacht can switch from one role to another effortlessly. Plenty of space is set aside for the owners and guests to enjoy alfresco dining, and simply enjoy each other’s company, in the two cockpits as well as on deck. They can access watertoys, too. Although specifics aren’t available, the yacht Maximus apparently carries a good assortment.
When it’s time to compete, though, the crew can attach her bowsprit, lower the jib tacks, and engage the Vitters-designed hydraulic system. Since trimming occurs via remote control, the designated crewmembers can handle the tasks wherever it best suits them, not necessarily at the helm. Furthermore, for racing but also cruising, the foredeck stays clear due to Vitters’ submarine anchor system. The same system is lightweight, too.
The studio Spencer-Churchill Designs worked with the owners for outfitting the interiors. The studio specializes in residential architecture, including period restorations. With a volume of 299 gross tons, the relaxation spaces include a saloon benefitting from wraparound windows in the deckhouse. Other than that, though, no other information is available at this time. But, the owners do have an electric peak-shaving system aboard, also from Vitters, saving fuel.
After delivery, Maximus will enjoy cruising with her owners, yet also offer charters—including for racing. She’s already available for bookings in the Caribbean this winter, too.
In the meantime, the shipyard continues work on the fast-cruising sloop Project 3093. Most of the details about her remain confidential.
