The fjords of Norway are captivating the owners of the yacht Q43, who are in the midst of their first cruising season. Chances are high that they’re also enjoying some of the best cups of joe available each day, considering they’re a family of coffee connoisseurs.
The family’s first summer aboard comes a little more than a year and a half after they met Mulder Shipyard. Their broker, Chris Collins of Ocean Independence, introduced them to the Dutch builder’s team at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in 2022. That meeting led to visiting the shipyard, and signing the contract for the seventh yacht in the Mulder ThirtySix series.
The hull was already in build, in fact, which was among the factors that appealed to the owners. So, too, did the working relationship with Mulder Shipyard and John Vickers of the interior-design firm Vickers Studio. “Our brief was to create a home from home for a family new to yachting, who wanted all the adventure and touring possible,” Vickers explains. He adds, “For real adventuring, you need to get into all the bays and shallow anchorages as well as feel comfortable with ocean crossings and big seas.” The Mulder ThirtySix, a 118-foot (36-meter) megayacht, can certainly pull into shallow areas, due to a draft of 6’7” (2.05 meters). Additionally, she has transatlantic range and a fast-displacement hull form promising a 15-knot cruising speed.
Though the engineering package was set, the owners of the yacht Q43 entirely personalized the interior. As already mentioned, they’re coffee lovers, and therefore have top-notch coffee stations throughout the superyacht. Two bars in the saloon, plus one in the beach club, satisfy other beverage and entertaining needs. A total of 10 people can stay aboard, in five staterooms. Overall, in terms of décor, the owners chose warm walnut accentuating a white backdrop, along with pops of turquoise and green. Notably, the blues and greens came about after the owners had selected wall art for various spaces, particularly the guest lobby. Here, tones of seagrass are just one of the highlights. But, since red is further one of their favorite colors, this bold choice appears prominently in two guest staterooms. It’s especially prominent since it’s in fabrics from Jean Paul Gaultier, a designer renowned for challenging convention.
The owners of the yacht Q43 (whose name comes from a New York City bus route) plan to spend the rest of the summer exploring the Mediterranean. She’ll then make her global boat-show debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September. Afterwards, she’ll make her American show debut in Fort Lauderdale in October.
